The song Friends (Time and River) emerged at a time when the Bulgarian pop music scene was seeking not just hits, but songs with a clear message and moral value. It was created as a result of the creative partnership between the composer Stefan Diomov and the poet Georgi Belev, with both drawing on their personal experiences and observations of human relationships.

The idea for the song was born not as a commission or a contest entry, but as an inner necessity—a desire to express something genuine about friendship in a world where it is often tested by time, distance, and life’s circumstances. An interesting fact is that the lyrics of “Friends” were written with the intention of sounding like a conversation, almost like a moral address, rather than a typical song. Georgi Belev deliberately avoids complex imagery and poetic embellishments so that the words can be understood and felt by everyone. It is precisely this directness that initially raises doubts as to whether the song might sound too “serious,” but Stefan Diomov recognizes its power and creates music that softens the message and transforms it into an emotional experience.

When the song entered Tonika’s repertoire, it quickly stood out among the other tracks. Interestingly, “Friends” didn’t become a hit immediately after its first performances, but gradually—through live concerts. The audience began to react particularly strongly to the chorus, often singing along with the performers, which made the musicians themselves realize that the song had found its way to the people. Over time, it became an integral part of concert programs and was often performed as the finale, when emotions were at their peak.

In the 1981 television contest “Melody of the Year,” the song “Friends” was selected as the song of the month for August; in the final round, it took first place and became the Melody of the Year for 1981.
